Camp Wainui is attractively set in a sheltered valley, and offers an ideal base for activities, adventures, learning and 'time-out'.  It is only 22 kilometres from the Wellington Railway Station, (about 30 minutes by car - except during "rush hour") and 10 km from the centre of Lower Hutt. Located at 203 Coast Road, Wainuiomata, the camp is less than 4 km South of the town's shopping centre.

A large part of the Camp's 240 hectares is clad in bush, native trees and ferns. There are many tracks through the bush for easy or more challenging tramping. Some tracks lead to the adjacent Rimutaka Forest Park.  In addition, there are grassed fields for sporting activities and/or tenting.  There is also a lagoon for swimming or canoeing - some kayaks and life jackets are available.

The camp is managed for the Camp Wainui Trust Board by our part-time management staff, Miria and John, who live on site with their family.  The trustees are volunteers with experience working with youth, particularly through serving as leaders in the Boys' Brigade.

Camp Wainui provides for all types of groups requiring accommodation - from small groups to larger numbers. There are three accommodation areas - the Peter Burgess Lodge Complex; the Grattan Bushline Hut plus tent and caravan sites.

Facilities

The Peter Burgess Lodge Complex
Opened in 1989, the Lodge Complex consists of four accommodation units, each of which can be hired separately. Each of the units has four bunkrooms sleeping 4 or 5, giving a total of 18 bunks per unit and 72 bunks in the whole complex. Mattresses and pillows are provided but you should bring your own pillowcase, cover sheet and other bedding. All units have their own toilets and showers.

Units 1 and 2 have their own kitchen and lounge - bring your own tea towels. Groups staying in Units 3 and 4 use the all-purpose hall, which has seating for 72 people and a large kitchen which includes a 5 m3 coolroom.

Catering: The Lodge Complex is a 'self-catering' facility and all groups will need to provide for their own meals.

Other facilities available for users of the Lodge Complex include a large meeting/recreation room in the "old dorm block" about 70m from Unit 1. A smaller teaching/meeting place is the nearby Stedfast Pavilion, which can seat up to 30 people.

The Grattan Bushline Hut
This solidly built spacious hut (pictured here) is in a bush setting some distance away from other parts of the Camp. Sleeping platforms on two levels accommodate about 20 people. A small number of mattresses are provided. There is a space for pitching tents nearby. There is no electricity and no cooking facilities but there is cold water on tap. Ample bench and storage space is available. No cooking or eating utensils are provided. Outside "privies" are a short distance from the hut. The toilet and shower facilities in the Skip Turley Amenities Block, almost 400 metres away, are available to Grattan Hut users.

Day use: For those not wanting to stay over-night, there are a number of outdoor facilities, mentioned above, available for group activities on site. Groups wanting to use these facilities will also have access to the Skip Turley Amenities Block (pictured here).
